Do you want to apply data science to one of the most important challenges in health research: enabling safe use of sensitive data at scale? In this role, you’ll develop privacy and security controls that protect participants while helping researchers generate insights faster and more safely. Our Future Health is an ambitious collaboration between the public, charity and private sectors, designed to help people live healthier lives for longer through better prevention, earlier detection and improved treatment of diseases. We will speed up the discovery of new methods of early disease detection, and the evaluation of new diagnostic tools, to help identify and treat diseases early, when outcomes are usually better. With over 2.5M volunteers across the UK, we’re now the world’s biggest health research programme of its kind, and our volunteer group is also more diverse than other, similar health research programmes. Technology and data are central to our mission. Our systems power web sites, clinics across the UK, secure analytics and research systems, pipelines that process highly sensitive health and genetic data, and we are continuing to grow our data science capability to support this ambition. To realise our ambition safely, we need to continue developing world-class approaches to data privacy, data security and responsible access to health data. We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist specialising in privacy, security and risk modelling, to help design, build and scale data-driven controls that protect participants while enabling cutting-edge research. This is a hands-on role where you’ll apply strong data science skills and an engineering mindset to real operational problems: safe outputs review, re-identification risk, privacy risks in trained models, synthetic data, and data-driven security controls. You will work closely with teams across Product, Security, Engineering, Science, Data Protection, and Researcher Operations as well as external experts to develop practical, scalable and evidence-based solutions. You will be expected to work closely with users of these systems including researchers, Airlock reviewers, access governance reviewers and security specialists, to understand their workflows, pain points and risk decisions. A key part of the role will be turning complex privacy and security problems into trusted algorithms, evidence and automated support. What you’ll do Develop data-driven approaches to disclosure control and safe outputs review, supporting the scaling of our TRE (Trusted Research Environment) Airlock. This may include building algorithms and automated review tools to classify outputs, detect potentially disclosive content, identify patterns of risk, and provide explainable decision support for human reviewers. Work directly with Airlock reviewers and operational users to understand where automation can help, where human judgement is essential, and how tools should be designed to support consistent, auditable and proportionate decisions. Contribute to our approach to de-identification and re-identification risk assessment, helping us assess how privacy risk changes across datasets, access models and analytical outputs. Help us develop our approaches to safe AI using health data, including how we assess and manage privacy risks associated with trained models. Explore and develop approaches to synthetic data generation, assessing how synthetic data can be used safely and usefully, and how to evaluate the privacy, fidelity and utility trade-offs of different approaches. Collaborate with our Information Security team on data-driven security control assessment, threat detection and monitoring approaches, including identifying signals of risky behaviour, anomalous activity or misuse of data access environments, and cyber risk quantification. Build prototypes and production-quality code, working with engineers to turn promising approaches into robust, maintainable and auditable tools. Work closely with governance, legal, ethics and operational colleagues to ensure technical controls fulfil their requirements. Keep up with emerging methods in statistical disclosure control, privacy-enhancing technologies, AI security, synthetic data, de-identification and privacy-preserving computation. This role will be fully hybrid with the expectation we get together in our Holborn, London office at least once per month. Requirements We welcome applications from all who may not feel they match the full criteria, so if you have most of the below, we'd like to hear from you: Significant experience applying data science, machine learning, statistical modelling or advanced analytics to complex real-world datasets. Strong applied statistical expertise, including the ability to quantify risk and uncertainty, evaluate assumptions, design validation approaches, interpret imperfect or incomplete evidence, and communicate the limitations of statistical or machine learning models. Strong Python skills and experience writing maintainable, production-quality code. Experience working in cross-functional teams with software engineers, data engineers or platform teams to design and deliver data products, pipelines, analytical services or decision-support tools. A user-focused approach to technical delivery: you are comfortable working with people who operate, review, govern or depend on data systems, and can translate their needs into technical requirements. Applied machine learning experience and understanding of common privacy attacks against data and models, such as memorisation, membership inference, attribute inference, model inversion or leakage through model outputs. Exposure to privacy-preserving machine learning, privacy-enhancing technologies or adjacent research areas (e.g. federated learning, secure aggregation, differential privacy, or confidential computing) Experience working with sensitive, confidential or regulated data and a strong understanding of privacy, confidentiality or information security risks. Ability to translate ambiguous operational, governance or security problems into clear data science questions and practical technical requirements. Good communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-specialist stakeholders. A pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset It would be a bonus if you have any of the following experience - Working with health data or biomedical research data, electronic health records, and ideally genomic data. Developing models, algorithms or rule-based systems that support human decision-making, ideally where explainability, auditability and risk management are important. Anomaly detection, behavioural analytics, security monitoring or detection engineering. Risk quantification methods from fields such as actuarial science, epidemiology, operational research, or cyber risk. Familiarity with UK data protection, research governance or health data access expectations. Experience with PETs or privacy-preserving ML frameworks such as Flower, Opacus, TensorFlow Federated or similar. Cloud platforms, containerisation, CI/CD, MLOps or production ML systems. Experience evaluating synthetic data using both utility and privacy metrics. Hiring Process We feel hiring should be transparent and give you a real sense for what Our Future Health is like. The Role (what we’re looking for) As a Senior Optimisation Scientist, you will be part of a team who, together, design, develop, and productionise optimisation algorithms and decision-support tools across multiple industries (e.g. transportation, logistics, workforce scheduling, and media planning), operating end-to-end from problem discovery and mathematical modelling through to production deployment, robustness hardening, and measurable value capture. You will collaborate directly with clients and internal stakeholders to translate operational challenges into tractable optimisation formulations and scalable software components, while also supporting peers through technical leadership, and code reviews in a flat, agile, interdisciplinary environment. In practice, you will act as a senior technical lead within a cross-functional product/delivery squad—partnering with software engineers, product, and domain experts—to deliver operationally critical decision-support capabilities end-to-end, including, but not limited to algorithms, data, integration, and runtime and observability). Responsibilities (what you will be doing) 1) Algorithm Development & Modelling Design and implement optimisation algorithms, including mathematical programming, decomposition approaches, and metaheuristics. Structure problems end-to-end: define decision variables, constraints, objectives, feasibility/optimality trade-offs, and operational acceptance criteria. Model both static and dynamic real-time optimisation and sequential decision-making problems. Prototype and validate approaches quickly, then evolve these into robust, maintainable production components. Select the right approach for the right job: explain trade-offs across exact methods vs. heuristics, runtime vs. optimality gap, and solution robustness vs. complexity. 2) Full-stack Production Readiness Deliver production-ready code, implementing optimisation pipelines and services using best-practice software engineering (e.g., modular design, strict typing where applicable, automated testing, documentation). Build and maintain robust data ingestion/cleaning pipelines supporting optimisation runs. Integrate optimisation services into workflow orchestration layers and the wider product stack (APIs, UI hooks, scheduling/execution). Implement reliability features: logging, monitoring/metrics, error handling, retries, fallbacks, and automated regression tests for operational edge cases. Contribute to cloud-based deployment practices and CI/CD pipelines; ensure reproducibility, traceability, and safe releases. 3) Client Interaction & Value Realisation Engage with clients to gather specifications, deeply understand the domain, and define what “value” means (service levels, cost, throughput, resilience, sustainability, etc.). Communicate modelling choices and results clearly to audiences with varying technical depth; articulate assumptions, limitations, and validation evidence. Quantify adoption and value capture: measure impact post-deployment and iterate based on operational feedback. 4) Technical Expertise & Team Contribution Follow current and contribute to setting future engineering standards for optimisation components. Provide code reviews; raise the bar on correctness, performance, readability, testability, and maintainability. Mentor and train other team members on optimisation topics and delivery best practices. Minimum Qualifications / Skills (what you need) Relevant PhD or Master’s degree plus experience on applied optimisation problems, including experience in industry. Deep expertise in at least one: Mixed Integer linear programming, or Metaheuristics, or Stochastic programming, or Reinforcement learning Strong ability to structure and implement optimisation solutions in real-world settings. Experience working in agile teams and cross-functional delivery environments. Demonstrate technical leadership and/or team leadership. Excellent written and verbal communication in English. Reliability, accountability, collaborative mindset, and ability to give constructive feedback while supporting team wellbeing. Deep programming expertise in at least one: Python, Java and/or Rust. Familiarity with modern delivery tooling such as: cloud platforms, Git workflows, CI/CD, containerisation (Docker/ECS-style), experiment tracking/model/data versioning, and workflow orchestration patterns. Behaviours and Mindset Systems Thinker: detail-oriented while holding the big picture. Curious, proactive, pragmatic, and data-driven. Collaborative, resilient, and adaptable to changing priorities. A technologist who keeps up with advances in optimisation, software development, and AI/ML. Committed to delivering real operational value—not just mathematically elegant or over engineered models. What we Offer Benefits - enhanced pension, life assurance, income protection, private healthcare; Remote working - café, bedroom, beach - wherever works; Truly flexible working hours - school pick up, volunteering, gym; Generous Leave - 27 days holiday plus bank holidays and enhanced family leave; Annual bonus - when Satalia does well, we all do well; Impactful projects - focus on bringing meaningful social and environmental change; People oriented culture - wellbeing is a priority, as is being a nice person; Transparent and open culture - you will be heard; Development - focus on bringing the best out of each other; If you feel like you don’t tick all our boxes but know you’d make a fantastic Senior Optimisation Scientist at Satalia, please do apply—transferable skills and experiences matter. The Ticker Plant team is building one of the world's most sophisticated real-time market data systems, processing hundreds of billions of financial events daily across millions of instruments. Our platform is the backbone of Bloomberg's market data platform, serving as the source of truth for global financial markets. Who are we? The SRE team is central to Ticker Plant's success and are at the intersection of systems engineering and financial technology. We are engineers whose expertise centers on the emergent properties of a massively distributed, large-scale, real-time market data system. Our mission aligns with our customers' expectations, and we focus on the characteristics of the system they care about, namely: Correctness - the data a customer sees should accurately reflect the marketplace Performance - real-time latencies should be minimised; requests should be served without delay Availability - System components will fail; in a sufficiently large system, parts of it fail all the time. But the system as a whole should not fail. Deployments and upgrades should not affect availability. We'll trust you to: Code - to read code, to debug code, and to write production-quality code. We provide software that defines the environment in which the component software runs. We build dashboards that are used to analyse current load and latency and plan for the impact of anticipated changes, but we also build the toolkits that allow for the software to be instrumented in the first place. Our platform technology provides self-service for many routine operations, and supports our Incident Response responsibilities. Design - We write code that integrates with components across the entire system. Often this work is done in collaboration with component teams. Our work with the component owners involves assessing workflows and designing appropriate interfaces that provide consistent access to the necessary functionality, and then building the applications that can perform many workflows via self-service or even automatically. Also, as components and product features move to production, we ensure that the features that are being introduced are supportable in production, without increasing operational load. Sometimes, this means advising the component team of existing solutions; in other cases, it means recognising gaps and filling those accordingly. This results in improving the designs of our features and our system. Analyse - Our key concern is the behaviour of the system. Often, we are asked to consider the impact of required or desired changes to the system before those changes make it to production. At other times, the system is simply not behaving as we expect, with no immediate obvious cause. We are the ones who are often asked to figure out what is going on. You'll need to have: Experience with an object-oriented programming language (C/C++, Python, Java, etc.) A Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, similar field of study or equivalent work experience Prior contributions to system design and architecture and scaling fault-tolerant, distributed systems Honest approach to problem-solving, and ability to collaborate with peers, partners and management Why this role matters: The market data infrastructure you'll help build and improve is mission-critical for the global financial industry. Your work will directly impact: The accuracy of financial market data worldwide The reliability of Bloomberg's core services The evolution of our market data architecture The future of financial technology We'd love to see: We primarily use C++ and Python, but an ability to present working solutions in any high-level programming language is sufficient to get started. We want to be clear here - this is a development position. In-depth knowledge of Linux/Unix Experience with blameless postmortems A passion for performance excellence, robustness and engineering mindset If indicated, please note that years of experience are a guide; we will consider applications from all candidates who can demonstrate the skills necessary for the role. Insurance isn’t the first industry most engineers think of when they imagine cutting-edge AI work. That’s exactly why this role is interesting. CFC’s Data & AI unit is building production agentic systems that automate complex underwriting decisions - not chatbots, not copilots bolted onto legacy workflows, but autonomous multi-step AI agents that reason over unstructured data, assess risk, and drive real business outcomes. We’re using frameworks like LangChain to orchestrate LLM-driven services that sit at the heart of how the business operates. The problems are genuinely hard: ambiguous inputs, high-stakes decisions, and the kind of domain complexity that makes for satisfying engineering. We’re also fundamentally rethinking how we deliver software. We’re moving toward an agentic-first development model - using AI agents not just in what we build for the business, but in how we build it. The goal is to multiply engineering delivery by an order of magnitude: not by cutting corners or generating throwaway code, but by designing robust systems and processes that let agents handle well-defined work while engineers focus on architecture, design, and the problems that actually require human judgment. This is a deliberate, engineering-led approach. We care about code quality, testability, and maintainability - the agent-generated code meets the same standards as everything else. We expect that a successful candidate will be able to bring their expertise to help guide and refine our agentic development process as it matures - a meaningful opportunity to influence how we work as well as what we ship. This is a Senior Machine Learning / AI Engineer role with genuine technical leadership scope. You’ll shape the architecture of AI-driven production microservices, own system design decisions, and work at the intersection of traditional software engineering and applied AI. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, data scientists, and product managers in a team that’s small enough for your decisions to matter and ambitious enough for the work to stay interesting. About the role Design, develop, and maintain business-critical AI agent services. Build tailored agent workflows and services from business requirements, using LangChain and related frameworks with reliable patterns for LLM-driven decision-making in production. Integrate tests and validation to improve AI agents through evals and monitoring. Work with software engineers and architects to lead system design and architectural decisions. Translate technical specifications into clean, testable, and scalable production code. Work closely with cross-functional teams - engineers, data scientists, product managers - to deliver features on time and to a high standard. Write unit and integration tests to maintain reliability and service correctness. Monitor, troubleshoot, and continuously improve production services. Produce clear, structured documentation for systems, architecture, and processes. Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, best-practice guidance, and knowledge sharing. About you We’re looking for an experienced AI or Machine Learning Engineer with strong software engineering fundamentals and a passion for building robust, production-ready AI systems. You’ll be someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, making thoughtful architectural decisions and working on systems where quality, reliability and maintainability really matter. You’ll have: Significant experience building production-grade AI agents or LLM-powered services. Insurance isn’t the first industry most data scientists think of when they imagine cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) work, but the incredibly rich data and nature of the business make it a great place to put cutting-edge AI to use. CFC's Data & AI team is building production agentic and ML systems that automate and inform complex underwriting decisions that drive real business outcomes - not demos, not proof-of-concepts sitting on a shelf. The team includes ML engineers and software engineers shipping production services, and this role sits alongside them as an analytical counterpart: running experiments, stress-testing assumptions, and generating the evidence that shapes what gets built and how it improves over time. We are looking for a mid-level Data Scientist to join the team that owns business-critical, live solutions utilising Large Language Models (LLMs), such as an email ingestion/extraction solution and underwriting agents. This is not a pure research or offline-modelling role - when research is carried out and potential opportunities identified it is expected that you will work closely with ML engineers and software engineers to build this into a live system, where quality, reliability, and evaluation rigor directly affects the business. We expect that a successful candidate will be able to own the data science side of a production LLM system end-to-end: partnering with stakeholders to build early prototypes, designing evaluation frameworks, measuring agent quality, and turning ambiguous "is this good?" questions into repeatable, defensible metrics - while working closely with engineers to understand what it takes to take that work from prototype to live system. About the role Explore complex, high dimensional, real-world datasets to uncover insights that meaningfully improve underwriting decisions and system performance at scale. Partner directly with underwriting and business stakeholders to scope problems, assess feasibility, and build early prototypes (e.g. PoC agents, rapid evaluation of an LLM approach) before committing engineering investment. Stay involved from prototype through to production, working with ML/software engineers to harden, scale, and maintain what you've built as a key contributor to the codebase. Design and run evaluation frameworks for LLM-powered agent behaviour, including offline (golden datasets, regression suites) and online (production monitoring, A/B testing) evaluation. Build and maintain analytical pipelines — prompt design, calibration against human labels, bias/consistency checks, LLM-as-a-judge, and ongoing validation that the judge stays trustworthy as the underlying models change. Partner with ML engineers to design system nodes/components, translating data science findings into concrete engineering requirements. Define quality metrics for agent outputs (accuracy, hallucination rate, task completion, groundedness, latency/cost trade-offs) and track them over time. Work with software engineers on productionising evaluation and monitoring code: CI/CD integration, release gating, and operational readiness (alerting, dashboards, on-call awareness). Actively explore cutting-edge developments in AI and machine learning — with the space and support to experiment, prototype, and bring new techniques into production where they add value. Investigate how agentic systems behave in production — identifying edge cases, failure modes, and opportunities to make systems more robust and reliable. Prototype and iterate on features for AI/ML pipelines, taking ideas from early exploration through to measurable impact in production services. Document experiments, findings, and methodologies clearly so that insights are reproducible and decisions are traceable. About you We're looking for a curious and technically strong Data Scientist who is passionate about applying AI and machine learning to complex, real-world business challenges. You'll be equally comfortable analysing data, designing experiments, engaging with stakeholders and collaborating with engineers to deliver production solutions. You'll have: Experience working in Data Science, Applied Machine Learning, NLP or LLM-focused roles. Strong Python and SQL skills, with experience working in production codebases and collaborative engineering environments. Hands-on experience evaluating, deploying and monitoring machine learning or LLM-powered applications. A solid understanding of experimentation, model evaluation, A/B testing and performance measurement. Experience working with modern AI frameworks, agent architectures or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions. Knowledge of cloud-based AI platforms, ideally within Azure. An understanding of how AI and ML systems are operationalised, monitored and maintained in production. Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical business outcomes. Confidence working directly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to solve ambiguous problems. An ownership mindset, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a cross-functional team. Nice to have Prior experience in a business-critical / high-uptime production environment Experience with Databricks Understanding of asynchronous programming, containerised deployments (Docker), and modern service architectures Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform Experience designing and building distributed, asynchronous microservices using message brokers (e.g., Azure Service Bus, pub/sub).
